Life Beyond the Generator-Discriminator Duel: Exploring GAN Alternatives in Modern Generative AI
For years, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) reigned supreme as the undisputed kings of synthetic media. When Ian Goodfellow introduced them in 2014, their unique framework—pitting a generator against a discriminator in a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game—unlocked unprecedented levels of realism in image generation, style transfer, and data augmentation.
Yet, for all their brilliance, GANs are notoriously fickle. Training them is famously akin to walking a tightrope without a net: they suffer from mode collapse (where the generator outputs a limited variety of repetitive samples), devastating training instability, and a lack of explicit probability density estimation.
