Decoding the Myth: Was Dr. Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer?
For millions of aspirants preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations in India, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti is a household name. As the founder of Drishti IAS and an influential educator, he is frequently addressed with deep respect, leading many newcomers to wonder: Was he an IAS officer?
The short answer is no. While his life is deeply intertwined with the civil services ecosystem, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti was never an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.
However, his relationship with the UPSC examination is far more nuanced than a simple “yes” or “no.”
The 1996 UPSC Success: What Actually Happened?
The misconception that Dr. Divyakirti was an IAS officer likely stems from the fact that he successfully cleared one of the world’s toughest competitive exams on his very first attempt.
- The Attempt: In 1996, at the age of 22, he appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
- The Rank: He secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 384.
- The Allotment: Rather than the IAS, his rank and service allocation placed him in the Central Secretariat Service (CSS).
A Brief Stint in Government Service
Upon clearing the exam, Dr. Divyakirti joined the Government of India as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
However, government bureaucracy was not his ultimate calling. Driven by a deep passion for literature, academics, and teaching, he decided to resign from his civil services post after a brief tenure of roughly a few months to a year. Choosing to step away from a secure government career to pursue education was a pivotal turning point in his life.
From Civil Services Aspirant to Master Educator
After leaving government service, Dr. Divyakirti immersed himself back into academia. He holds multiple degrees from the University of Delhi, including a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), a Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Hindi Literature.
