Unlock Your Ultimate Playlist: How to Add Custom Songs to Spotify
Have you ever searched for a rare remix, an unreleased track, a video game soundtrack, or your own musical masterpiece on Spotify, only to find it missing? You are not alone. While Spotify boasts millions of tracks, it doesn’t have everything.
Luckily, Spotify has a built-in feature called Local Files that lets you bridge the gap. With a little help from your computer, you can seamlessly mix your custom audio files right in with your mainstream favorites.
Here is your complete, step-by-step guide to adding custom songs to Spotify on both desktop and mobile.
Step 1: Prep Your Audio Files
Before diving into Spotify settings, you need to make sure your custom audio files are ready to go. Spotify can be a bit picky about formats!
- Supported Formats: Stick to standard .mp3, .mp4, or .m4p files. (Note: If your files are in FLAC, WAV, or AAC format, you may need to convert them to MP3 first).
- Keep it Clean: Rename your files with simple titles and artists, avoiding weird symbols or special characters that can confuse the app.
- Get Organized: Create a dedicated folder on your computer (for example, call it “Spotify Customs”) and drop all your target tracks inside.
Step 2: Enable Local Files on Desktop
Even if you primarily listen on your phone, you must start on a computer (Windows or Mac) to set everything up.
- Open the Spotify desktop app (this feature does not work on the web player version).
- Click on your profile picture or icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down until you see the Your Library section.
- Toggle on Show Local Files.
- Once turned on, a new button labeled Add a Source will appear. Click it and select the “Spotify Customs” folder you created in Step 1.
Your custom songs are now officially imported into Spotify! You can find them by going to your library and clicking on the Local Files folder.
Step 3: Put Them in a Playlist
To play your custom tracks easily—and more importantly, to sync them to your phone—you need to add them to a playlist.
- Create a New Playlist in your Spotify desktop app. Name it whatever you like (
