Before the Stardom: The Quiet, Artistic, and Relentless Predebut Journey of Song Kang
Long before he earned the title of South Korea’s “Son of Netflix” and captured hearts across the globe in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless,, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a young man navigating the uncertainty of his future in Suwon, South Korea.
While fans today know him for his striking visuals and magnetic on-screen presence, his path to the spotlight was far from an overnight miracle. Behind the glamorous actor is a grounded story of quiet introspection, athletic pedigree, and a steadfast refusal to take shortcuts.
An Artistic and Athletic Household
Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in an environment deeply steeped in both discipline and creativity. His father was an artistic gymnast, while his mother worked as a piano teacher. Given his family background, athletics and music were early fixtures in his life.
As a child, Song Kang naturally gravitated toward the piano, even winning several awards during his elementary school years. However, growing up with a gymnast father also meant sports were unavoidable. He tried his hand at various physical disciplines—ranging from boxing and kendo to judo. Despite his athletic upbringing, Song Kang eventually realized that competitive sports weren’t his ultimate calling, setting the stage for a different kind of performance.
Turning Down the Idol Track
With his standout height (standing tall at 186 cm or 6’1″) and striking, sharp features, it came as no surprise that the entertainment industry took notice of Song Kang early on.
During his youth and university years at Konkuk University (where he majored in Film Arts), Song Kang was repeatedly scouted by multiple K-pop idol agencies. In an era where transitioning from trainee to idol is the standard pipeline for many young Korean stars, receiving casting calls from talent labels was a massive opportunity.
However, Song Kang turned them down. His heart was entirely set on acting. He didn’t want to perform on a music stage; instead, he wanted to dive deep into human psychology, script analysis, and character portrayal. Rejecting the fast track to stardom proved his long-term vision: he wanted to build a career defined by longevity and depth, not just a fleeting pop-idol trend.
Moving to Seoul and Writing Diaries of Resilience
When Song Kang entered university, he made the major life transition of moving to Seoul to live on his own for the first time. Facing the sudden silence of an empty apartment away from his family brought a wave of profound loneliness.
To cope with the solitude and soothe his mind, he picked up a habit that he maintains to this day: diary-keeping. Rather than venting frustrations, young Song Kang used his journal entries to honestly catalog his personal strengths and weaknesses. In interviews, he has noted that writing these diaries during his pre-debut and early rookie days significantly boosted his self-esteem, helping him stay grounded amidst the rejections that every aspiring actor faces.
The Breakthrough at Namoo Actors
The turning point of his pre-debut era arrived in December 2016 when he officially signed with Namoo Actors, a prestigious entertainment agency known for housing powerhouse actors.
Training under a reputable label gave him the professional foundation he needed. Just months later, in March 2017, he officially stepped into the industry with a supporting role in the tvN romantic comedy series The Liar and His Lover. Though his screen time was modest, it marked the official death of the “ordinary student Song Kang” and the birth of a rising star.
From Humble Roots to Global Icon
Looking back at Song Kang’s predebut years reveals a young man who trusted his instincts. By bypassing the pressure to become an idol, enduring the quiet loneliness of living alone in Seoul, and committing entirely to the craft of acting, he laid a rock-solid foundation for his future success.
