Demystifying the “Veo Hold”: Why That Pending Charge Appeared on Your Card

Picture this: You finish a quick, five-minute e-scooter or e-bike ride across campus or downtown. You lock up your vehicle, walk away, and a moment later, a notification pops up on your phone. The alert shows a pending charge that looks significantly higher than the actual cost of your brief trip.

Instantly, thoughts of hidden fees, software glitches, or accidental overcharging might cross your mind. However, what you are looking at is not a final fee at all. It is a Veo hold—and it’s a completely normal part of using micro-mobility services.

Understanding how this financial mechanism works can save you unnecessary stress and help you manage your digital wallet more smoothly.

What Exactly Is a Veo Hold?

A Veo hold (technically known as a temporary pre-authorization or payment reservation) is a temporary charge placed on your debit or credit card when you initiate a trip. It is not an actual fee or a permanent deduction from your funds.

Instead, Veo typically initiates this hold under specific conditions:

  • Zero Wallet Balance: You start a new trip while your in-app Veo Wallet balance is empty.
  • Low Active Balance: Your active wallet balance drops below $1 while a ride is already underway.

Why Does Veo Do This?

Because e-scooters and e-bikes bill by the minute, the final cost of a trip is entirely unknown at the exact moment you scan the QR code to unlock.

Without a temporary pre-authorization, a user could theoretically ride across town on a depleted bank account, leaving the company to absorb the cost of a failed transaction. The hold acts as a safety net, verifying that your payment method is active and has enough funds to cover the journey you are about to take.

If this process sounds familiar, it’s because it works identically to the temporary holds you encounter when pumping gas at a service station, checking into a hotel room, or booking a ride-hailing vehicle.

What Happens to the Money?

When a hold is placed, the funds are temporarily set aside by your bank. Once your ride concludes, the actual cost of the trip is deducted, and the rest of the process unfolds in one of two ways:

  1. Rolled Over for Future Rides: If you don’t use all of the “hold” money during your trip, the remaining balance is kept as a credit in your in-app Veo Wallet. It will automatically be applied toward your next ride within a 24-hour window.
  2. Automatic Release/Refund: If you don’t take another ride within that 24-hour period, Veo automatically releases whatever funds are left over, sending them back to your original payment card.

Why Is the “Pending” Charge Still Showing?

One of the most common points of confusion is seeing a hold or a pending charge linger on a bank statement long after a ride has ended.

Even though Veo releases the unused funds immediately after the 24-hour mark, your bank or credit card issuer dictates how fast those updates appear on your screen. Financial institutions typically require an additional 3 to 5 business days to officially process the release and update your available balance.

Tips for Managing Veo Holds Like a Pro

  • Pre-load Your Wallet: If you want to bypass pre-authorization holds altogether, consider manually adding funds directly to your in-app Veo Wallet before you ride. Keeping a positive balance prevents the system from needing to trigger a fresh hold on your bank card.
  • Exercise Patience with Banks: If you notice a hold hasn’t vanished instantly after your ride ends, remember to factor in standard banking processing windows. A “pending” status is controlled entirely by your bank’s backend systems.
  • Keep Receipts Handy: If a hold seems abnormally high or fails to drop off after a week, reach out to Veo’s customer support via their in-app help center with your trip details for a quick resolution.

Next time you see a temporary charge pop up after a quick scooter ride, you can rest easy knowing it’s just a standard safety check—and your funds will be back in your account in no time.
