Before the Spotlight: The Fascinating Early Life and Pre-Debut Journey of Song Kang

Long before he earned titles like “Netflix’s Son” and dominated global television screens with hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a regular young man trying to figure out his path. With his striking height and effortless visuals, it is hard to imagine a time when he wasn’t destined for stardom. Yet, the road to becoming one of South Korea’s most recognizable leading men was paved with unexpected career dreams, rejected idol casting offers, and a lot of quiet self-discovery.

From Architectural Dreams to DiCaprio Inspiration

Growing up in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang didn’t always dream of the spotlight. In his school years, his early ambitions leaned toward design and structure. Inspired by striking visual layouts, he spent a considerable amount of time wanting to become an architect or a furniture designer. However, he eventually stepped away from those dreams, humorously admitting in interviews that he simply had “no idea where to start”.

The true turning point for his artistic awakening came from Hollywood. Like millions of moviegoers worldwide, a young Song Kang was completely transfixed by Leonardo DiCaprio’s iconic performance in Titanic. Watching DiCaprio sparked a deep-seated fascination with the craft of acting—planting the seed that would eventually lead him to pursue a Film Arts degree at Konkuk University.

Turning Down K-Pop Idol Scouts

Given his 1.86-meter (6’1″) frame and boy-next-door visuals, talent scouts naturally took notice early on. Before his official acting debut, Song Kang was frequently approached and offered opportunities to train as a K-pop idol.

In an industry where many actors initially cross over from music, Song Kang made a conscious choice to turn down these idol offers. His heart was entirely set on acting, and he chose to focus single-mindedly on honing his theatrical craft rather than stepping onto the music stage.

The Humble Beginnings and Fierce Competition

Song Kang officially broke into the entertainment industry in 2017 with a supporting role in the tvN drama The Liar and His Lover, playing a sweet, guitar-playing high schooler. He also dabbled in hosting music programs like SBS Inkigayo and appeared in variety shows to build his confidence and public presence.

However, early success didn’t mean roles were just handed to him. When auditioning for his breakout Netflix series Love Alarm (2019)—the project that catapulted him to international fame—Song Kang had to beat out roughly 900 other applicants for the role of Hwang Sun-oh. Directors were looking for the absolute embodiment of a webtoon character come to life, and Song Kang’s raw, earnest audition won them over.

Overcoming Loneliness and Building Resilience

Stepping into the entertainment world brought its own psychological hurdles. When he first entered university and began living alone in Seoul, Song Kang experienced a heavy wave of unfamiliar solitude. To cope with the quiet, he started a habit that he maintains to this day: writing personal diaries.
