Behind the Blocks: The Wild True Story and Plot of the “Tetris” Movie
When most people think of Tetris, they picture falling geometric shapes, frantic background music, and the crushing anxiety of an oncoming wall of blocks. They likely don’t picture Cold War espionage, KGB surveillance, corporate backstabbing, and high-stakes international law.
Yet, the 2023 biographical thriller Tetris, directed by Jon S. Baird and starring Taron Egerton, reveals that the battle to bring the world’s most famous puzzle game out of the Soviet Union was stranger—and far more dangerous—than fiction.
The Spark: Discovery in Tokyo
The film kicks off in 1988. Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) is a Dutch-American video game developer and entrepreneur living in Tokyo. Struggling to keep his software company afloat, Henk stumbles upon a prototype of Tetris at a trade show.
It was created by Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov), a soft-spoken software engineer working under the watchful eye of the Soviet state in Moscow. Henk is instantly hypnotized by the game’s hypnotic, universal design. Realizing it has billion-dollar potential, he risks everything—mortgaging his home and taking out massive loans—to secure the global distribution rights.
A Tangled Web of Corporate Greed
The core tension of the movie stems from a massive, convoluted rights war. Due to the secretive nature of the Soviet Union, the intellectual property rights had been haphazardly sold off to multiple parties by a state-run software agency called ELORG.
- Mirrorsoft: Run by media mogul Robert Maxwell and his slick son Kevin, this British publishing giant believes they already own the worldwide rights.
- Nintendo: Looking for a killer app to launch their upcoming revolutionary handheld console—the Game Boy—Nintendo enters the fray. Henk realizes that pairing Tetris with the Game Boy will change gaming history forever, but he needs to lock down the handheld rights specifically.
As competing business entities try to out-maneuver, bribe, and legally crush one another, Henk realizes he is merely a small fish swimming in a very toxic, corporate ocean.
Behind the Iron Curtain
To cut through the chaos and secure a legitimate deal, Henk takes a dangerous gamble: he flies directly to Moscow, Russia.
Landing in the USSR during the final, crumbling days of the Cold War, Henk steps into a paranoid nightmare. He is tailed by KGB agents, watched through hotel room peepholes, and threatened by corrupt state officials who view intellectual property as a foreign capitalist trick.
Amid the dread, Henk manages to track down Alexey Pajitnov. Despite the language barrier and extreme political risks, the two men form an immediate, genuine bond. They share a love for coding, gaming, and a dream of seeing people worldwide connect over falling blocks. Alexey shows Henk a side of Moscow far away from state propaganda, and Henk promises to ensure Alexey finally gets the recognition—and the wealth—he deserves for his creation.
The Climax: A High-Stakes Escape
As the corporate greed of Robert Maxwell escalates, the situation turns hostile. Maxwell uses his political leverage in the UK and USSR to try and steal the rights away from both Henk and Nintendo, threatening ruin for everyone involved.
With ELORG officials demanding more money and the KGB closing in, Henk, Alexey, and Nintendo executives execute a tense, high-pressure race against time to finalize contracts before the Soviet government collapses entirely. The film culminates in a nail-biting exit from Moscow—heightened with classic cinematic car chases and border-crossing tension—as Henk tries to smuggle the legal documents and his friend’s future out of the Soviet bloc.
The Legacy
The movie concludes with a satisfying historical epilogue:
- Tetris launches with the Game Boy, becoming an unprecedented cultural phenomenon.
- Henk and Alexey go on to found The Tetris Company, remaining lifelong friends.
- Alexey eventually emigrates to the United States, finally reaping the rewards of a game that proved language, borders, and politics don’t matter when humanity is united by a desire to bring order to chaos.
